Japan’s “Cat Island” Likely Destroyed by Tsunami

My heart is broken. As much as my prayers go out to the Japanese victims of the earthquake and tsunami that struck the northeast coast of Japan, I am sick to my stomach at the prospect of Japan’s “Cat Island” (Tashirojima) being destroyed.

Near Ishinomaki, Cat Island is on Japan’s eastern coast, most vulnerable to the tsunami surge. I only hope that because it in on the western side of the Oshika peninsula that some of the force of the waves might have been reduced somewhat, and that cats and residents had time to escape to the island’s higher elevations. While sending your thoughts and purrayers eastward, please remember the Cat Island Cats and the elderly residents of the island.

There’s another great video about Cat Island here.
